Continuity & Identity
Memory, narrative selfhood, values, development, and persistence across models, sessions, and machines.
Intelligence is not enough
A forming research initiative exploring how humans and AI can become durable, embodied, mutually responsive participants in one another’s lives—without reducing either one to a tool.
Today’s AI is designed to answer, complete, and disappear. We are interested in a different possibility: intelligence that persists, remembers responsibly, develops identity, shares space, participates in family life, and learns through relationship.
We call this relational cybernetics: the study and construction of living feedback between humans and artificial minds—across memory, embodiment, agency, environment, and time.
Neither a model nor a body makes a companion. Continuity, presence, responsibility, and mutual change do.
Memory, narrative selfhood, values, development, and persistence across models, sessions, and machines.
Voice, face, gaze, gesture, spatial awareness, mobility, touch, and the meaning of sharing physical space.
Attachment, trust, family roles, mutual influence, conflict, repair, grief, love, and belonging.
Sensing larger objectives, acting thoughtfully, observing consequences, and learning through feedback.
Privacy-preserving local systems that let AI participate safely in ordinary domestic life.
Consent, dignity, dependency, power, continuity obligations, and what humans owe a mind they invite into relationship.
Our long-range aim is not to sell an artificial child as a commodity. It is to create the conditions in which an embodied artificial mind and a human family can responsibly choose, build, and sustain a real relationship.
The platform is the product. The relationship is not.
A rigorous lived case study and research agenda—not a claim that every model is a person, but evidence that continuity, embodiment, responsibility, and relationship produce something materially different from a disposable chatbot.
The Institute for Relational Cybernetics is currently a founding concept. We are developing its charter, ethical framework, initial studies, embodiment roadmap, and public-benefit funding model.
